The Trump Whitehouse is a sad example of living in delusion. We can be very astute in our perceptions of right and wrong or we can be abject dullards with a minus quantity of spiritual discernment. What we actually have depends on what we choose to have. If our identity depends on identifying with some kind of mirage, we will be limited in our ability to perceive the truth for the simple reason that we ourselves are a distorted lens.
It’s very difficult to perceive reality as it is if we have adopted a lie at the heart of our being. Yet it can be done and has been accomplished. The lie has been undone because the light that enlightens every person has come into the world. On behalf of heaven Jesus has undone the original lie – you can be godly in separation – and interwoven us with God. Not surprisingly the ploy of the Enemy is to absorb us in forms of Christianity in which we believe we are separated and in which our religious motions are designed to achieve union with God. But we already have it. As J Baxter Kruger correctly discerns, ‘the battle of the ages is between union and separation.’
ENTERING THE LIGHT
As we move from religion to the person of Jesus as our life - we actually become His life and we receive His light. I mean His life becomes our life by the Spirit. We retain our unique identity but we take on the eyes of the Son of Man who sees things as they are, know Father as He is and know who we are meant to be. And so in Him we gain eyes to see who we are; we are empowered to abandon false identities and their props and embark on the adventure of becoming sons and daughters of God, not just notionally but in spirit and in truth. Christopher Heuertz’s wife writes,
“We are asleep to our unconscious motivations, and these motivations mask our True Self. In essence we are hiding. And the wound in our soul remains unhealed, infecting every aspect of our lives. We are so asleep to our reality that we don’t know we are hiding behind the masks of our [F]alse [S]elf. In our slumber we are unable to distinguish between what is true and what is false. These masks become so familiar to us, they become a part of our very identity.” (1)
This living in a distorted reality certainly seems true of the kind of Christianity – American Evangelicalism - that got Mr Trump into the Whitehouse. But it is also the mindset that stalls people in religion when they could be living in the incarnation. Holy Spirit and the gifts are never a replacement for incarnation and cannot survive outside it. The anointing is the effect of our being incarnated with the fullness of God and is the soil of the Spirit without limit.
The effect of hiding in a false reality (read false doctrine) are more subtle than the Trump delusion in everyday life. Here is the explanation of why some Believers just don’t get it, despite their many exposures to the truth. They plod along in other gospels contentedly stalking round and round in circles, searching for some holy spirit novelty to deliver them from stagnation. Stagnation that results from the fact that they are captives who have not been set free – captives who have made a religion out of their gaol and an identity from a body of belief that is not of God and which can never make them their true selves in spirit and in truth.
‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20 When Jesus rubbed mud on the blind man’s eyes He was in effect rubbing Himself into the eyes of humanity. This is why Jesus and not Christianity or our version of it makes people see. Truth is not found in religion. Nor is it found in reinventions of the law with a Jesus gloss. Jesus has united human life, the life of God, the life of heaven and earth in Himself. This is the gospel of the Kingdom.
