She came to a section of her life where she stopped and said, ‘I found that when I came home there was no-one there.’ Many people live from externalities, convinced that this is real life and where life is ‘really at.’ Spirituality is meant to equip us to live from something more whole and holistic. It can do if we are astute enough to live in God and in so doing join ourselves to spirit and life.
When Christ is your life, you are your life in all your uniqueness and you possess life to the full. You are alive in the Spirit.
Extravagance of life is ours - but not if we are living from the law and a belief system. We can short-change ourselves by living in religion instead of in God. Many do this and think this is spirituality. But it’s not the real thing. Genuine spirituality is never any kind of ‘externality.’ It’s union with God. Jesus described it speaking these words,
‘You will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14,20.
Once we agree to be received into Jesus, we are received into His life and the life of our Father and Holy Spirit. We have been absorbed into the fullness of personhood and the completeness of humanity. More than this we have been made one with life itself which is spirit. We are one with Him and God is one with us. This is wholeness and life. It is the spirit and life within that impart spirit to our every external act. Our spirit is alive and we are cease being sellers of religion and become ministers of new covenant spirit and life.
“Our union with Christ further reveals that because the same Spirit that awakened the body of Jesus from the dead inhabits us, we equally participate in his resurrection. In the same act of authority whereby God raised Jesus from the dead, he co-restores your body to life by his indwelling Spirit” Roman 8.11 Mirror Bible.
A spiritually alive person is more subtle than obvious. Alive in the Spirit they release the life of God by being themselves. Genuine spirituality is never any kind of externality. This is why the law is not spiritual or life-giving. Abstractions never are. Don’t attach yourself to the law even by one item of observance. Spirit and life comes from Christ in you being Christ as you. In this new and living way you will be authentically alive. You will be spiritual, not pious and life-giving, not a distributer of a disguised form of death.
