HIS LIFE AS YOURS 2
People can have strange and confused ideas of the new covenant. Some steeped in law don't’ know it exists. Others regard it as a new version of the old covenant. This places them on a treadmill of attempting to earn merit with God.
Others think the new covenant is all about love. Their love. Since Jesus endured so much for us on the cross we cannot help but love Him and this love in us prevents us from sinning. Sounds plausible but it’s wrong. You cannot love Him that much. When the chips are down you will always love yourself more. But there’s a greater inherent weakness here than this rope of sand. The onus of performance remains on you. In the new covenant you are loved by God’s performance. He gave His only Son and Jesus performed for you. Jesus is your love. Jesus loved the Father for you and He loves you.
GRACE AND THE LAW
Some think grace is a means of coping with the law. But grace is Jesus. Grace is the means of living in a life that is not ours.
‘For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God’ Eph 2.8 NIV.
Others are taught that that we come to the Father by loving God more. Or that we can be victorious by ‘keeping close to Jesus.’ These are old covenant notions of the obey and live variety. No. The good news is this: Live in Me and obey because I will obey in you!
GOD EXPRESSED AS YOU
In the new covenant Christ is your life in all respects. He is your door or way to the Father. In Jesus you always have access to the Father. Jesus is your intimacy with the Father. Intimacy with God is great. God listens to His friends and shares Himself and His plans with them. But not because they have performed or are worthy. But because His Son has performed and is worthy. God did this for you because Father already loved you so much He gave His only Son.
"You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being." Rev 4.11 NIV.
The new covenant does not exist to that we can keep the law with skill. It exists so that Jesus can be our life with joy.
In the new covenant Christ is your life. Here you are not getting life by measuring up to Christ. He is our life. Jesus lives in us and we are transformed by His Spirit. With Jesus in us His love for the Father becomes ours. With Jesus as our life we receive Father’s love for Jesus as if we are Him! Don’t place yourself outside this grace by your addiction to performance. Don’t live in something Father left behind at the cross. Don’t deny yourself this grace by an obsession with earning you own merit. It’s a wise man who worships a God made in Jesus’ image rather than being tied to the notion of God made in the image of himself.
‘Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me’ John 6.57 NIV.
