MORE THAN A WOOD HEAP
People who attempt to live in the law and the Spirit at the same time are among the most miserable you can see. Living in a split personality between the old and new covenants they have two masters and two personalities. One the old man of sin and the other the one new man in Christ who is beyond their reach. But they can be delivered from this body of death.
‘What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?’
Rom 7.24 NIV. Rejoice O wretched one. You are already delivered!
The coming turmoil in the political and economic realm will make it very difficult for those who have looked to find security and salvation in themselves and their church routines. Those living in intimacy with Jesus will ride out these storms in relative comfort while engaging in unparalleled opportunities to minister Jesus to a desperate world. They will act in the love, authority and power of their King and, so to speak, walk on troubled waters. The pre-occupation of Believers embedded in performance and religion will be to survive their anguish and attempt to forge a real relationship with Jesus through the gift of desperation.
But we can live in Jesus today. When Jesus died you became alive. The curtain was ripped and the estrangement of man and the Father was no more. At Pentecost the Spirit of Jesus came to live in men and women. The Gift of the new testament from God is ‘I will be your life.’ My life will wash you and progressively transform you into the likeness of My Son. Jesus is now your ‘law’ and your life. He is the righteousness of God in you – the law of the spirit of life. Righteousness and life are no longer a list. They are a Person - the Person who lives in all who believe; the Person of which we are His Body.
‘I in them and you in me--so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me’
John 17.23 NIV. Being the Body means being in the existential union of the One Spirit. This is the basis of your life. Not something for you to attain. You and Jesus are one which means that you and our Father are one.
If you have been schooled in the system and culture of law, you may well imagine that Jesus kept the law. Not so. He observed it as a Jew but did not keep it in the sense that He lived from it. The law was made for sinners. In Jesus there was no sin. He didn't need the law. He lived from His Father. He and the Father were one. Today your privilege is to live from Jesus. This is what new testament living is: One with the trinity by the One Spirit.
‘We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful’ 1 Tim 1.9 NIV. We can live in obeisance to the law or we can live in the spirit of sonship. It’s one or the other. Never both because the gospel is not yes and no but always yes in Jesus.
‘But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law’ Gal 5.18 NIV.
Today we live in the Spirit and are led by the Spirit of Christ. In Jesus we have the same privilege of living in Father by grace. We are in Jesus and Jesus is in the Father. Thus He is the way to the Father – the new and living way. How good is that?! The righteous acts of a legalist are miniscule compared to the righteousness and rivers of life that flow from those whose life is Jesus. In Jesus you have a living fortress of safety and victory over the Enemy and every work of the infernal powers. In Jesus you can walk on water and be an island of security and love in a sea of chaos. Don’t bury this gift in the ground. The Spirit of Jesus in you is life. The flesh counts for nothing. In the law you can be a good wood heap. In the Spirit of Christ you can be a tree. A tree of life.
