Christ Your life

His Kingdom multiplied through you

YOU ARE MY BODY

If we are fundamentalists and children of the law, we may think that truth is expressed by making statements and propositions. This is the legalistic Christian mindset that grew out of Roman culture.

STATE OF BEING

If we are children of the Spirit and have ventured into our inheritance of union with God, we will know that truth is expressed in relationship. This is to say that truth is less what we know and more what we are. It’s a state of being.

J Baxter Kruger uses the word perichoresis to describe such a relationship. “
In this freedom arises a fellowship and sharing so honest and open and real that persons involved dwell in one another. There is union without loss of individual identity. When one weeps, the other tastes salt. It is only in the Triune relationship of Father, Son and Spirit that personal relationship of this order exists, and the early church used the word ‘perichoresis’ to describe it. The good news is that we have been included in this relationship and it is to be played out fully in each of us and in all creation.

IN THE SPIRIT

The relationship here described is the kind of relationship that became ours when Jesus delivered us from the separation of the law into the state of union with God that is ours in the new covenant. Paul says, ‘Christ is our life.’ The implication is that the trinity is our life and we are theirs. There is no dualism here. No dichotomies of being. But an interweaving of our being with that of Jesus and the trinity.

It will be seen that one cannot be in the Spirit and in the law at the same time. They are mutually exclusive. This is why the new covenant life must totally
be our life and not some mixture with the old covenant of letter and law. It follows that the union known as being part of the body of Christ is an inter-woveness of being. Never a propositional statement from the letter that kills.

WHEN YOU REALISE

This state of being, this kind of relationship, this union is the real meaning of belonging to the Body of Christ. It’s expressed here. ‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20. Before we realize this it is our inheritance. When we realize it becomes our possession. We have taken ownership and entered this relationship.

Every one belongs. Those who ‘realize’ possess and enjoy their inheritance. They have the mind of Christ. They participate in the gospel of the Kingdom. They are the sons of God - not notionally - but in spirit and in truth.
