In the last post we talked of the importance of theology. Right theology is simply the truth about God, who He is, what He has done for us and who we are in Him. Should we have a theology that distorts God we can expect to live a distorted Christianity and a bent mission.
‘But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God's curse!’ Gal 1.8 NIV.
A curse stunts and withers. We often call a desert a cursed land. If we become a cursed people it is not because God does not love us or that He is vindictive. It means that we have refused to live in His reality and chosen our own. We have said, ‘You are a hard man, this is too good to be true and buried His gift in the ground of unbelief and an aberrant gospel.
‘Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed’ Matt 25.24 NIV.
There are theologies that suffocate Christ and which asphyxiate the Believer. Now a victim of bad theology rather than a recipient of grace he gets to have a message that instead of setting captives free, imprisons in the name of God. If it is a serious thing to claim to be a minister of God and then equally abuse people. It is also a serious thing to promote a distorted gospel that cripples and abuses people in God’s name. A gospel that is a lie will never grow the Kingdom.
‘If anyone causes one of these little ones--those who believe in me--to stumble, it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea’ Mark 9.42 NIV.
Right theology is simply that Christ is all and in all. It is that Christ is our life; that our life in Adam is dead and we are alive in Christ. That we are not separated from God but that we are communion with Him. That we have a home that is real, personal and communal in the Family of God.
‘Jesus replied, "Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them’ John 14.23 NIV.
Right theology is that God ended living in the law as a ‘way’ and made a new and living way to live in God which is God’s initiative to live in us. This way is Jesus, the Son of Man and Son of God. Fully God and fully man, we are in Him and in Him we are in our Father. We are home.
Right theology is the new covenant. The new covenant is not listed in the new testament because it is not a list, not a set of commandments but a person. Christ our life is not something we have earned. Our union with God is a gift - the result of God’s unilateral action on our behalf. We can agree with this and flourish or ignore it and spend our lives in shallows and in miseries and call this ‘our Christian life.’
In right theology the issue of the age is the loving nature of our Father, His complete integrity and absolute love. Together with the fact that He is absolutely for us. Second to this is the truth that we are sons. Sons not only by definition but sons in spirit and in truth, created by God for fellowship with God and redeemed into a certain and guaranteed communion with God and each other. This is the gospel of the Kingdom.
‘And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come’ Matt 24.14 NIV.
