The whole person approach is that Christ’s life becomes our life. We become the righteousness of God because Christ is our life. His Spirit in us drives out all that is dead, debilitating, sinful and degrading. His life over us s our grace. He is not an addition to our life. He is our life. The gospel of the Kingdom is Christ manifest as you.
‘But now God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago’ Rom 3.21 NLT.
You are not a re-conditioned child of Adam. You are a reborn son in the person of Jesus Christ. Let me explain.
You could give this old truck a new coat of paint. But it would remain the old truck, decrepit, immobile and in danger of shaking to pieces with any kind of locomotion. Then again you could replace all the panels, fit a new tray and install are new engine. Then put in a new drive-train and gearbox and install new springs and new rubber. So transformed you would have an almost totally new truck. Almost new but still a derivation of the old. The new covenant is not an adjustment of the old. Neither is it an improvement on the old. So different is the old covenant from the new that we cannot minister it and are not competent to multiply it if we are connected to the law.
‘God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God’ 2 Cor 5.21 NIV.
The new covenant is not a clever way to keep the law. Neither is it a subtle way to live the knowledge of good and evil with success. It not an easier way to earn something from God. It is the gift of God.
The new covenant is not a reconditioned old covenant truck. It’s a distinct, separate and entirely different kind of vehicle. It is not ‘obey and live.’ It is ‘You are alive and now you have an inbuilt capacity to obey.’ This new potential is Christ your life. This capacity to obey is the obedience of the trinity in you and the spirit of Jesus manifesting as you.
Father, Son and Holy Spirit have birthed a new man. The first of the transformed is Jesus Christ - the firstborn from the dead and the One New Man in whom we are transformed from children of Adam to new creation children of God. As sons we are the manifestation of our Father. As brothers of Christ we are the manifestation of His Person. As the Bride of Christ we bear children who are sons and initiate projects filled with spirit and life. All of this is relational since we have been made one with God and are the ever emerging expression of His being.
‘For in him we live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring' Acts 17.28 NIV.
When Father, Son and Holy Spirit make our home in us, they begin to transform us from the inside. Christ is our life because He put us to death in Adam and resurrected us in Himself. In Him we are an entirely new creation. Not an adjustment of the old but sons of God in spirit and in truth.
Many Believers would do themselves a real favour by living from Jesus rather than from living from religion. Living Christianity is not the life of the Kingdom Jesus began. Christ our life is this Kingdom and you and those who live in this radical spirit-life, rather than in the shadows of conformity to things like Christian routines and values. We can be Christians by militating against abortion, pornography and pollution but this is not the Kingdom He began. The Kingdom of God is modelled and advanced by living His life and promoting His life as the life of the world.
As real sons living in the reality of Christ we are rooted in our Father. Here we manifest His nature and become the unique sons each of us are as we grow out of Him and are mentored by Him. Jesus was who He was. He acted in the authority that was His and fulfilled all that Father sent Him to do because He and Father were one - not because He was anointed with Holy Spirit. He enjoyed the anointing of Holy Spirit without limit because He was one with our Father. Painting Holy Spirit and the gifts onto old covenant, law bound religion is like painting this truck with a new coat of pain and expecting it to be a useful carrier of cargo. It cannot happen. Old covenant religion cannot maintain life in the Spirit or grow the Kingdom of God.
Some think that our life in the Spirit is getting a word from God and obeying it. That’s a fruit but it is not the root. Life in the Spirit is the very being and person of Jesus alive in you and imparting Himself to you. Life in the Spirit is God incarnated in you, God in three persons come to dwell in you. The Spirit of Sonship in which you now live is real and happening because you are in our Father and He in you. You are truly sons of God. This is the soil of the anointing and the ground in which real trees of life flourish.
