‘For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ’ John 1.17 NIV.
Grace gives us freedom to be wrong and space to grow. But grace is always an opportunity to advance into truth, particularly into the fullness of the reality that is Christ. Grace is never an excuse for a stubborn attachment to ideas that have held us back all our lives. Jesus is grace as well as truth and life. It is by His grace that we are given space to relinquish ourselves and our faulty beliefs and the lies in which we have been smothered to grow increasingly into the reality that beckons - the reality who is Christ our life. Grace is Isaiah 61 and the setting free of captive in action.
In the new covenant Christ plus nothing is our life. In the new covenant we are saved by grace and not by works. There is no ‘but’ permitted here. We are not saved by grace and then presented with a ‘but the person who is saved will be doing these things (here a list is presented). There no list in the new covenant, and no ‘buts’ because there is no law. But there is life. What operates is Christ your life, who makes your spirit alive from His presence in you. There is an increasing order, peace, unity and joy about your life because your union with God in Christ is real.
Your inheritance is union with God. It is your possession. But you are not living in it if you are living from old covenant religion. You are living in what was rather than what is, the shadow instead of the reality. You are living in a false reality, But the reality is Christ.
The new covenant is not a theology. Neither is it a version of the gospel. It is the gospel and not just any gospel. Quite distinct from notions of ‘other gospels’ the new covenant is what God has done for humans through Christ. Some people, indeed some denominations, are afraid of the new covenant. Living in denial they avoid an understanding of it. Because it they did understand and embrace it, the entire foundation of their denomination would dissolve. Then it would be seen that they had made a religion and a life from cunningly devised fables.
‘Better to live dangerously with Jesus that subside into a living death by dragging around ‘this body of death.’’
Don’t live in shadows when the reality is Christ. The religious man is constantly driven to claim that the shadows are the reality. But the reality is Christ and you are the most real as a son/daughter of God when He is your life.
The fact is, we are more than saved to eternal life. We have an eternal life that begins today. The trinity enters our being when we believe. They share their life with us. God within changes our life. But our eternal life and our salvation does not depend on the degree of change achieved. Our acceptance with God comes from Father’s acceptance of His Son in our name.
The new covenant is more than victory over sin. It is more than a positive replacing a negative. Our new covenant life is Jesus Himself. This is the vicarious humanity of Christ which means that in all things relevant to God and ourselves, Jesus represents us totally.
The new covenant is not listed anywhere. This is because the new covenant is the person of Jesus as us. Jesus alluded to it when He said, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life.’ Paul spoke of it when wrote the words, ‘Christ our life.’ The new covenant is summarised in Galatians 2.20,21 where Paul writes,
“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. “I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.’
