When we express ourselves as sons and daughters of God we are the expression of Jesus and our Father. This is because under the new covenant we and Father are one. We are together as as result of the cross and together by the One Spirit. This is how we speak words of Spirit and life as Jesus did. Jesus was one with His Father. As a result He had the Spirit without limit. The same applies today. Because Jesus is our life we and Father are one. We do what Father is doing and we release streams of spirit and life.
‘All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him’ Matt 11.27 NIV. Anything we do can have an effect. Our efforts can be inconsequential or fruitful. Truth liberates more life. In the Kingdom truth liberates and multiplies life exponentially. But here truth is never an abstraction, but an expression of Jesus. Jesus declared that He was the truth, the way and the life. He meant that His life as our life has made us truth-tellers, liberators and multipliers of His life - not by copying any method or by attempting to live from a Christian values - but by receiving Him as who He was: The Spirit of life come in our flesh.
We are not able to release spirit and life from a law and an old covenant mindset because in this mindset we remain separated from God. The at-one-ment is muffled and we are dulled by the flesh. We may release a few droplets of life due to Christ’s grace but never rivers of living water. As sons who are in new covenant union with God we are the expression of our Father and we speak His words.
When Christ is our life we are always effective, fruitful and life-multiplying. Christ is our life when we are adhering to the doctrine of the apostles in which Christ is all and in all. The new covenant is code for Christ my life. This implies that it is His person by the Spirit with whom we are one and in Jesus we are one with our Father. In Jesus Believers come to know our Father, enjoy communion with our Father and Holy Spirit and are inhabited by the trinity. Our inheritance, when Christ Himself is our life, is ‘Sons of God.’ This is an advance on the law and old covenant where we are workers and slaves of the law and religion.
Attached to the law we are not one with our Father.
In our new covenant mode as ‘sons’ joined to Father we live in the Spirit of Sonship and as it was with Jesus, we do only what our Father is doing. Our actions are filled with His divine life and always suited to minister abundantly to the situations and people we find ourselves with. We emit spirit and life. Our actions are never inconsequential and religious. In every instance we advance the Kingdom.
In my many years of observing Christian preaching and being a preacher I have seen that those attached to the law do not release spirit and life.
Religion is performance based. In the frame of the law, any homily on ‘goodness’ will do - like a piece of Christian philosophy or a personal observation. Being a child of the knowledge of good and evil it presumes to produce godliness by presenting some worthy thought or beneficial course of action. But it can only multiply information. Sincere as it may be, it fills a religious space, with tedium and talk that has no consequence for the Kingdom. No enlargement of the Kingdom because it has no spirit and life. But in our new covenant mode of union with Father, we are one Spirit with Him and all we are is spirit and life, all the time. Why? Because we are alive and we ourselves as sons are the manifest presence of God.
‘The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you--they are full of the Spirit and life’ John 6.63 NIV. The drawback of the old covenant ministry is that we minister out of the body of death - the corps of religion Paul speaks of. In its hybrid christianised form, this is the knowledge of good and evil with a Jesus gloss. But it is not the gospel of the Kingdom and it lacks His relevance and spirit-life. The nature of this mode blinds us to the lifelessness in which we are encased, even when we are making an effort in the name of God. But the truth is that it takes us round and around the mulberry bush. It does not advance the Kingdom of wisdom, revelation and eternal life in Christ.
Life in the Spirit flows from union with our Father. We are one with Him when we have entered our liberty from the law and performance. The gifts of the Spirit are never a substitute for new covenant living. They cannot be sustained on their own and eventually fade. A spirit-filled community with an old covenant base will eventually die. Life in the Spirit is not life in charisma. It is life in our Father. Our root is in ‘we and Father being one.’ Our fruit is the multiplication of Christ as the church.
In law/performance/religion mode we are rooted in ourselves and as a result of our mindset, we are cut off from the Spirit of Sonship. People can talk of the latter yet be separated from its dynamic in spirit and truth. Separated because we have chosen to live in the false reality that is no longer His reality. We can be captured by our minds when our minds are the repository of false doctrine that limits our understanding of our fullness in Christ.
In the new covenant where Christ is our life, we and Father are one. This is the root of the anointing and the source of the Spirit’s authority. It is the double-edged sword that cuts through falsehood and death. It’s true that because of grace we can release a few drops of water from an old covenant position. But hey! - who wants to be a sprinkle when you can release rivers of infinite life?!
‘Through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death’ Romans 8.2 NIV.
