Duty is not love. Neither is conformity to principle. Love is not love unless given freely and spontaneously. Love is of the spirit and never of the letter. Given for any other reason it is not love. It is something like compulsion at worst or duty at best. Few people get married because it is a duty to marry. Any woman who is a true woman would not willingly marry a man who married her out of duty rather than a deep desire to know her and share her life. It is not chance that our Father who is love has made a way, through great pain to be with us and in us. Neither was this a last minute bid to save the day when caught unawares by Adam’s fall. The creation of human beings and the re-establishment of their Sonship was the original plan. This plan was their passion to share their life; for us to have the joy of companionship that is theirs and to bring the world into their communion.
Since God is love the nature of our being is intertwined with love personified. When God said I will write my laws on their hearts. He was not saying anything as mundane as putting Moses laws on people’s hearts like some inside tattoo or a holy graffiti. There can be little as paltry as law riddled love because this is not love at all.
The ‘on hearts’ was a prophecy about putting Himself, His love and His nature in our hearts – at the core of our being. Should we live with law in our hearts we live out of judgment of self and others. When Christ is our life – Father is our heart – and we live in His grace and largesse towards self and others. It is God’s love that has drawn human beings into a greater intimacy with God than before the fall. Yet this was not an afterthought. It was THE PLAN.
‘For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross’ Col 1.19 NIV.
The at-one-ment is not the work of an angry God after His pound of flesh. It is the plan of love where Father and Holy Spirit were in Jesus drawing all into union with themselves.
There is nothing more austere than the law made god and nothing more withering of life to the full. But there is nothing more spiritual than love. And nothing more alive. Thus to be infilled by God and transfused by His person is to be ignited with spirit and life. Love – the joining and embracing power of the universe - is the expression of God in His fullness. It is the togetherness and joy of the trinity in communion that lives to draw us and all things together to itself – yet liberating all that has been created to be who and what it is. Perversion and distortion is the way of life under Adam. Life to the full is the new and living way of our rejoicing in the New Adam.
This is why the knowledge of good and evil does not cut it. It is why a philosophy of good does not suffice and why the possession of a belief system on its own is such dry bones. Some of the dullest, most barren sermons I have ever heard are theologically correct but devoid of spirit and life. Well, I should say ‘theologically correct’ up to a point. The kind I am talking of are grounded in the law and old covenant assumptions which castrate them of union with God. In Jesus we have the liberty to be the unique expression of Him. But none of us as individuals or as a denomination has any right to adopt beliefs that negate the new covenant on the grounds that this is ‘our perspective.’ We have no right to such a perspective. Not unless we are willing to accept that a curse goes with it and we are unwitting purveyors of the anti-christ spirit. This curse is the withering effect of separation from God. If we are connected to the law we are not connected to the vine.
Anything not rooted in love will become a dead tree because it is not rooted in life. To be rooted in love we must be personally rooted in the person of God – and we are. In Jesus we participate in the fellowship of the trinity and more. They flood our being with themselves. Jesus joins God to you and you to God.
‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20 NIV.
There is a reason why love produces babies: Only love is the cause and effect of union and only union produces life to the full. Masses of emotionally wounded and crippled people are testimony to the fact that anything not love, like lust or duty debilitates human life. It is significant that the One who draws all people to Himself is the one who is the groom while the Bride who is His wife is the church. He is the one who woos us to Himself to participate in the marriage that he has already accomplished. This is how the sons and daughters of God are reproduced. You have one husband who is Christ.
Any teaching that is truth declares Christ come by the Spirit to be your life. Any teaching that substitutes something else like the law or that advocates a dob of law to smarten up your act did not come from God but from the pit. By their fruit you shall know them.
‘Every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world’ 1 John 4.3 NIV.
Jesus was full of grace and truth because He is love. Love is truth. Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom. Freedom for what? Freedom to live in the fullness of your nature. Any attitude that reduces life to law, limits truth. Should an attitude accommodate itself to error because ‘this is our perspective, tradition of what we as a people believe - is not love. It’s a form of abuse. It degrades because it robs people of life. The wilful plodding in tradition for any of these reasons is slow poison that ends in death. The letter always does. In the Christ of God we live in person who are the truth and the truth becomes us. This truth is that we are brought into alignment with our Father, we and Father are one and we become sons in spirit and in truth
‘And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ--everything in heaven and on earth’ Eph 1.10 NLT.
