Christ Your life

His Kingdom multiplied through you

OBSTINATE

Beware of an obstinate attachment to a personal or sectarian perspectives. Jesus Christ is the truth about our Father and Holy Spirit reveals the truth about Jesus. Karl Barth writes of the witness of Holy Spirit to theology and by implication to communities of faith who live from assorted theologies. In God’s sight there is only one legitimate and one life imparting theology: His own. Holy Spirit is the guardian and witness to God’s ideas about Himself and us. He lives to reveal the truth about Christ, His plan and who we are as a result. Should we have a ‘gospel of our own’ and have managed to absorb a major or minor distortion of the gospel of the Kingdom, Holy Spirit will begin to attack our assumptions and positions so that we can live in the fullness of God’s provision. Speaking of ‘our thologies,’ Bath observes.

‘Yet  [if this] theology does not muster the courage and confidence to submit itself fearlessly and unreservedly to the illumination, admonition, and consolation of the Spirit, it refuses fuses to permit itself to be led by him into all truth. By such refusal, theology fails to give, in its inquiry, thought, and teaching, the honor due the Spirit of the Father and the Son that was certainly poured out over all flesh for its sake. One moment theology stands in out-and-out fear of the Spirit; in another it plays dumb, perhaps pretending to be better informed or else becoming  obstinate in open opposition to him.’ Karl Barth. SPIRIT OF TRUTH

Holy Spirit will come among Christians to display His power and illustrate His complimentary role in being God to us and in us. Holy Spirit comes not as a gimmick or to afford an upgrade  to first class in the Kingdom aircraft. He comes to reveal and affirm the gospel of the Kingdom that was lived by Christ and taught by John and Paul. He is the custodian of heaven’s gospel for man and acts to to preserves its accuracy and validity so that it does not become polluted, diluted and death-dealing instead of life-giving.

‘Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God's holy people’ Jude 1.3 NIV.

GRACIOUS WITHDRAWAL

If we are unwilling to alter our beliefs in order to harmonise them with those of God and His Kingdom; if we effect to play deaf and dumb because we respect our perspectives more than we do the perspective of God on Himself, we cannot expect Holy Spirit to press the case or remain in intimate communion. He is  the Spirit of Truth and does not act counter to His nature. If we find ourselves walking in circles, going over old ground and generally dormant this can be the reason. We have by confining ourselves inside our a priori beliefs; we have preferred our theology over that of the Spirit, our Father and the Son and committed ourselves to dragging about a body of death in the name of life.

Should we ignore the Comforter she will withdraw for a time until we are willing to relinquish the false comfort of our beliefs. We can stumble towards the Kingdom in the disability of another gospel or we can stride onwards in the boldness of daughters and sons in God’s Gospel of Himself and us. Those who have the Son have life. Those who have a lesser son do not have life. But they could if they were not obstinate.

‘For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ’ 2 Cor 4.6 NIV.
