Many Believers think Godliness is about being good. But that’s not the full story. Godliness is about ‘being.’ It’s about being a daughter or a son. As sons we are the expression of the trinity.
Being good is an effect. Being is primal. Being one with God is what have as a result of the cross.
We don’t get to be sons of God by earning it or transforming ourselves. Because we cant. We have become sons of God in spirit and truth in the person of Jesus Christ.
We get to be sons/daughters by designation. ‘For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith’ Gal 3.26 ESV. This is to say that we are sons of God in spirit and truth by agreeing with God about what God believes – which is that Christ is our life.
‘But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God’John 1.12 NIV.
ORIGIN AND DESTINY
Before the cross those who believed were sons of God by birth. Following the cross people became sons of God by reconciliation, atonement and incarnation. All of this summed up in the vicarious humanity of Jesus.
Godliness is by designation and by fact. The fact is that we are part of God. We are God’s sons and daughters by origin and by redemption. Jesus urged us to step into the fact of this Kingdom reality with the words, ‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20 NIV.
We can live in the letter and in words of scripture because we are sons of the letter instead of sons of God. But we can cut through the accretions of intellectualized religion into a naked union with God in Jesus Christ.
NEVER A SABBATH REST
Some of us live a strained religious life - with life in the spirit continually eluding us. The reason? We will not let go of earning our self-worth through effort. We prefer this syndrome and the fantasy that Christ is a hard man to the raw paradox that Jesus is our life in every way. Once we accept this we can have a Sabbath Life of ontological rest in God and release the fruits of spirit and life in relaxation and peace. Spirit and life is the difference between kingdom and religion.
FRUITS OF REST
The fruits of the Spirit are not things you do to show yourself worthy or obedient. They are not a substitute version of the law as some imply. These fruits are simply you being a son/daughter of God.
IN THE SPIRIT
‘For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God’ Rom 8.14 NLT. If we are led by the law the implications are clear.
Godliness starts with you being who you are. A son of God. The fruit of Godliness occurs because you increasingly do what sons and daughters do. Advance, fade, advance again - You are always a son and the person of Jesus is increasingly manifesting as you no matter how erratic your progress.
WHAT LOAF ARE YOU?
Sons of God do better than a notional quoting of texts about the ‘one loaf.’ They are woven into God. As sons they are the actual manifestation of the trinity. Those who walk in the Spirit of God are the sons of God. They walk in the Spirit because Christ their life is JESUS EXPRESSED AS THEM. Life in the Spirit is not about spiritual gifts. Life in the Spirit is you and Father being one and your expression of our Father as the Spirit of Sonship. Gifts and anointings are a function of we and Father being one. Reason from cause to effect.
Gifts of the Spirit and charismata should not be siloed off as a thing in themselves. When operating properly they are rooted in the new covenant and the incarnation – the effect of Christ come in our flesh.
In such a compartmentalizes ‘silo’ of ‘the gifts’ we may heal people and prophesy but remain dead in our spirit unhealed in our souls. Unhealed because our father wound – separation from God has not been left behind with Adam and Moses. Your Godliness, your inheritance is this: You and our Father are one. This is the soil of Godliness, of fruitfulness, of your wholeness and the Kingdom of God. It is your rest from self-validation and your Sabbath life of interwoveness with God.
