IT'S NOT BETTER TO BE ILLITERATE IN ANYTHING THAT MATTERS
Having viewed the documentary, American Gospel, I cannot say that I am surprised at the parody presented as faith. What I can say is that I am pleased that there are American pastors with sufficient integrity and allegiance to the person of Jesus to speak out about people being short-changed by ‘another gospel.’ Someone observed that the pastors who speak in the doco are unknowns. They probably are, because they do not belong to the celebrity class of minister who has opted to be a money changer in the temple in this season.
Having a daughter who is a chaplain among university students and who has occasion to meet with pastors in the suburbs of Melbourne, I am hearted that the pastors and ministry leaders she has met are not money changers and have a simple desire to spread the knowledge and life of Jesus.
People need to know that Jesus is Everything.
The Gospel of Jesus is simple and profound. “In the incarnation the eternal Son assumed human nature into oneness with himself but in that assumption Jesus Christ is not only real man but a man. He is at once the One and the Many, for in Jesus the Creator become man, all human nature has been assumed.
The point for our consideration here is the fact that it is in this union of the human hypostasis [one substance] or person and the divine Hypostasis or Person that Jesus Christ is the personalising Person whose saving power is brought to bear directly upon us. In him the incarnate Son and Word of God, Creator and creature, divine and human nature, are united in one Person, so that in Jesus our human being is radically personalised and indeed humanised, and as such is brought into intimate union with God and into the Communion of the Holy Trinity.” (1)
SONSHIP – ONE SUBSTANCE WITH GOD
You are one with Christ and as a result we are one with God as sons/daughters in spirit and in truth.
‘For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end’ Heb 3.14 NASB.
‘Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires’ 2 Peter 1.4 NIV.
CHRIST IN YOU
Jesus is not rattling around inside of you. Incarnated in you, Jesus is part of your being - what John calls, ‘Christ come in the flesh,’ which is the touchstone between a real gospel and a false gospel.
The Christ who is completely God and a member of the trinity lives in you. The Lord’s Table, the mass, the elements and Holy Communion are not really an occasion to mourn about the cross. They are not bits and pieces of religion. They are the signs that Christ is literally your life.
Holy Communion is about our communion with God, about our oneness with Him, about the fact that our daily reality is that we are one substance with Christ as the consuming of the bread and wine illustrates. The food and drink becomes us just as Jesus becomes us. This life in the Spirit. Let’s be clear. Law and old covenant religion plus the gifts is not life in the spirit.
‘Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you’ John 6.53. NIV.
Sam said to his mate George, ‘You and I are different.’ We are said George, ‘Because you live in your old covenant separation from God and I live in my new covenant union with God.’
