‘But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law’ Gal 5.18 NIV.
Some of us can operate out of a sense of entitlement. Some of us think we have the truth but try to keep this smugness hidden as best we can. We can get to think we are ‘entitled’ and imagine ourselves operating from a contract – like the old covenant ‘obey and live’. But this is not our new testament life. There is no contract, no deal. Just the gift of a life in Christ instead of a living death in Adam. It’s incarnation.
‘I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!’ Gal 2.21 NIV. The grace that is Christ as us is life in the Spirit.
OFFENCE OF THE CROSS
Some are offended that grace is a radical as it is. And often because righteousness is Christ our life rather than some item they have selected for themselves.
The sad fact of a life in Adam is that we may not know we are dead in spirit because we refuse to know that we are entitled to a luxurious inheritance of spirit and life in Christ - plus nothing.
NOT MORE OF THE SAME
“When it comes to understanding the continuity and discontinuity between the two covenants, Hebrews is a pivotal doctrinal letter emphasizing the supremacy of Jesus over everyone and everything that came before. Telling a Jew that Jesus was better than Moses was not a message guaranteed to win friends and influence people. It was decidedly "un-seeker friendly." (1)
Telling people that they are liberated from the law and that the law is passé is just as annoying to some Christians - who like to imagine that they have earned some acceptance by keeping (bits) of the law – often bits that entail no sacrifice or any real holiness.
OFFENCE OF THE CROSS
The truth that offends some is the offence of the cross. This is the truth that Jesus becomes you; that His life is your life and that real Kingdom life consists in your becoming more the self that you really are as created and redeemed by God. This may not seem offensive to all but to some it means that all they think they have in the present is worthless and that they must find a new way and start again.
This is rebirth.
Jesus is THE WAY to kingdom life because Jesus is the undoing of Adam and the ending of the curse of death both of the soul and the body. In Adam we remain dead while we are ‘alive.’ In Moses we are dead while we are alive because we still in Adam’s curse. This is why Paul announces that Jews who constrict themselves in the old covenant belong to the ‘body of death.’ Jesus is not only our way to eternal life. He is our infinite spirit and life in the present. In Jesus, Christ has come in our flesh. You are now a life-giving spirit.
Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again’ John 3.3 NIV.
