‘Being’ is what we don’t have in separation from God. ‘Being is what we do have as a result of the cross and the at-one-ment. The ‘being’ of sons is oneness with God. Keep this in mind.
God is not made known to us through idols of any kind, whether these idols be wooden or stone, representations of animals or mythological gods, or whether these ‘gods’ be systems of belief or denominational distinctives that are worshiped as though they possess life.*
God is mediated to us through God, specifically by Jesus Christ who does more for us than present knowledge to us about God but who weaves us into God and God into us. Thus ‘knowing God’ and being ‘Godly’ is a state of being rather than a set of beliefs to which we adhere. Even so, ‘Believing is seeing’ in that to believe in Jesus, which is to use the ‘Jesus Lens’ is to believe the truth in spirit and in truth.
TO KNOW GOD
Thomas Torrance observes that, “We can know God only if he brings us into communion with himself in the inner relations of his own being as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This sharing in the knowledge that God has of himself was made possible through the incarnation of God’s Son and his mediation of the Spirit of the Father and the Son. In the incarnation God communicated himself to us in Jesus Christ his beloved Son, not something about himself, but his very Self, and thereby made himself known to us according to his own divine nature as Father.” (1)
AGREE WITH GOD
God in Christ was incarnated among human beings. But He is incarnated now in all who believe that Christ is their life. He is near all on account of the atonement but is woven into the being of those who agree with Christ that He is their life.
The knowing of God far exceeds the degree of ‘knowing’ that is the knowledge of the fundamentalist or law-keeper. It is that quality of ‘knowing’ and ‘oneness’ that is found in a good marriage when spouses ‘know’ each other in the fullest sense. One might have sex with one’s spouse and still not know her or a wife might seldom have sex with her spouse and not really know him because they are not really one. ‘Knowing’ is holistic because it is about being.
But we are not talking of sex here. We are talking union of being. Torrance expands on the oneness that is ours in the fullness of the trinity. “At Pentecost God poured out upon us his own Spirit who as the Spirit of the Father and die Son is the immediate presence of God to us in his own very being as God. In Jesus Christ God has embodied in our human existence the mutual knowledge which the Father and the Son have of one another and in the Holy Spirit he gives us communion in the mutual relation of the Father and the Son and thus makes us share in the knowledge which the Father and the Son have of one another.” (2)
The oneness in individuality and communion that the trinity has becomes our oneness with God in the person of Jesus Christ.
Should we be amenable and eager enough to move beyond the pattern of a religious routine we can participate in the mutual knowledge the Father and the Son have of each other. Not because we have earned it or are pious but because this is the gift of God. Such knowing is ours if we are astute enough not to leave it out in the paddock of our inherited assumptions and beliefs.
The fall replaced the knowing of being with the futility of knowing god in separation from God. This was a knowing called the knowledge of good and evil. This is the tree that sucks up life and never multiplies life – The fruit of this tree is form without substance. The tree of the Christ who came through the cross has fruit of infinite life. By eating of this tree we become one substance with God.
* There is a kind of ‘distinctive’ adhered to by some that separates the adherents of such beliefs from the gospel of Jesus and the apostles because it is ‘another gospel’ and not a real gospel at all.
