Paul extols the wonder of God’s reconciliation of us to Himself. We have been made one with God by God; made part of Him in Jesus Christ so that as Jesus was one substance with the Father, so we have been made one with God in a similar way. We have been woven into God in our being and included in the fellowship of the trinity as sons/daughters of God.

This is a knowing of God and our being one with God in the manner of perichoresis where we are one with God and grow in becoming fully ourselves.

Torrance grounded the revealed knowledge of God in the personal ministry of Christ as the one who discloses to us the innermost being of God in the same act of reconciling estranged and sinful humanity to God. This is the inner logic at the heart of the atonement that binds humanity to God in a saving way and God to humanity in a knowing way.” (1) We will not know God in the law or know ourselves because the law separates from God whereas God joins us to Himself in Christ.

Your union with God has nothing to do with the law and religion and everything to do with God who has made you one with Himself in Jesus Christ.

Quoting Paul, Torrance celebrates the extravagant reconciliation effected on our behalf.

What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him, God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For what person knows a man’s thoughts except the spirit of the man which is in him? So also no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. And we have received this Spirit from God, not the spirit of the world, so that we may know the things which God has graciously given to us.” (2)

The exquisite understanding and insight of Holy Spirit knows God for us and applies this knowing of God and His Presence to our lives. The trinity in us nurtures and sustains us in growing in our sonship/daughtership so that we are continually maturing into authentic expressions of Christ. This happens in a way that can never be achieved by the cumbersome prescriptions of the law, which in any case produces separation and never reconciliation. If you are a religious person you need to know that the law does not make us Godly.

If being wooden, as in woodpile rather than Green Tree is ok with you, stick with the law. If being a human being and becoming your best self and growing daily in spirit and life is your goal, do what Jesus urged and cultivate what is yours – Christ come in your flesh to ignite your spirit, soul and body with Himself.
