We live in the culture of the fall until we are born again. The new birth is being born out of Adam/Moses into Jesus. One we have made this transition we are alive – but not before.
The tree of knowledge has rotten fruit. Knowledge of good and evil thinking is transactional – a form of contract in which we attempt to earn union with God. It has to be because it arose from the illusion that we must offer something of our own to ‘become as gods.’
The trouble is we lost something because we were already as gods. This work is the life of legalism and the knowledge tree. We were sons. Adam and Eve were directly a daughter and a son of God. The delusion of Satan has always been to offer what you already are, as if you do not have it, so long as you submit to his way and his authority – which just happens to involve separation from God.
God gave us the old covenant within this frame. ‘Obey and live.’ He knew it was not going to work but as humanity we needed to learn that we are incapable of being Godly in separation from God. This would prepare us to receive the truth. The truth that ‘God would become us’ by means of the fact that the Son would become a human being and by the Spirit would manifest as human beings in all who believe.
This is the cleverness of the Lord. Satan said, ‘You will become as Gods’ as if we were not already daughters and sons. The genius of God is that according to The Plan, God became us. This is to say that following the cross and resurrection the Christ of God would come by the Spirit and live in us so that His life would be our life.
‘Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan’ Eph 1.11 NIV.
It’s simple bit too simple for some. Some have made religion out of making a plan more complicated than it is. The simplicity of His gospel is made into a revisionist gospels that is not the gospel of Jesus and the apostles.
This is life in the Spirit and the only way our replication in Christ can happen. Christ ‘comes in your flesh’ and by the Spirit manifests as Bob, Jean and George. As such both you and the church are the manifestation of Christ. You advance according to your original design and all of us grow according to His fullness.
‘He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit’ Titus 3.5 NIV.
The new covenant is this: You are alive in God to be sons and daughters.
Those bound in the law are contained in the syndrome of ‘I must do this so that for me, God will do that.’
To the immature Believer this ‘that’ from God is getting to ‘heaven.’ It’s not until we get older and more discerning that we look for more than pie in the sky by and by. We hunger for life now. And it can be had. Jesus called it the water of life that He gives freely. It is the essence of spirit and life that sustains our soul. It’s Jesus in us and more. Jesus as us.
This ‘life’ is available to all. We have been drawn into it. It’s a lake of living water that is the trinity and our belonging in it that is life itself. Richard Rohr writes, “This movement in faith allows you to bypass your usual pattern of dualistic thinking: not forever, but just long enough to think and act holistically — contemplatively — for a while. That is its only point. It is not about believing unbelievable things or renouncing your rational mind. Eventually, you must make use of reason again or, instead of becoming a mystic, you quickly become mystified!” (1)
But the reasoning is this: Christ is our life. We and the trinity are woven together which means that we and our Father are one. Our status is not one of separation and straining to be worthy of union. We have been given union and our rest is to live and grow as daughters and sons in this life.
