Have you ever tried to do ‘community’ because you read about being one as God is one in John 17? It doesn’t work at any depth and mostly does not work at all. Why? Community is not a doing. It’s being. The solution to belonging is not found in externalities. It’s found as we agree that we have been received into Christ’s life and that we have what He has – the communion of oneness and individuality. It’s about being.
‘I have given them the glory You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one— I in them and You in Me—that they may be perfectly united, so that the world may know that You sent Me and have loved them just as You have loved Me’ John 17.22-23 NIV.
The heart-hub of belonging in the universe is the trinity. The perichoresis that is the norm here is the healing of your being, the healing of the church and the world’s healing.
SONS NOT SLAVES
This post is about living in our inheritance as sons of God and rejecting being workers and sons of the slave woman. In Jesus God has made a way for us to be one with Him, one with ourselves and one with each other. This Living Way is the person of Jesus. J Baxster Kruger writes,
“The doctrine of the Trinity means that relationship, that fellowship, that togetherness and sharing, that self-giving and other-centeredness are not afterthoughts with God, but the deepest truth about the being of God, ” - from ‘Jesus and the undoing of Adam.’
What about Adam has been undone? The separation begun by Adam has been undone by Jesus. The fragmentation of your being has been undone in Christ. Your comatose spirit has been awakened in Christ. Your diseased soul has been healed in Christ and you possess the health of Jesus’ being.
You are included in the fellowship of God which is to say that you are bathed in their love and their presence. Thus any gospel that assumes separation is no gospel at all. The accomplishment of the Divine Conspiracy – communion with God is your inheritance.
The new wineskin has been defined as different things – as salvation itself, as Spirit-filled living and as the re-invented church. It may produce all of these but this is not it. Neither is the new wineskin the old testament with a Jesus ‘Red Bull’ Shot. The new wineskin is more basic and more primal than that. It’s union with God. The new wineskin is our interwoveness with the trinity and the trinity’s interwoveness with us. It’s Adam undone and Jesus Christ won.
‘On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20 NIV. If we have not REALIZED this yet NOW would be a good time.
UNION WITH GOD
Union with God began with Emmanuel: God with us. Union with God was explained and deployed in the ministry of Jesus. Union with God was secured when Jesus cried, ‘It is finished!’ What was finished? The separation that Adam began was finished. The separation of Moses and the law was undone. On Easter Sunday the at-one-ment between God and man entered the world as Jesus left death behind. At Pentecost the at-one-ment secured by Jesus Christ was poured out on all men and women.
What is our prize? We now possess the fellowship that the Son enjoys with Father and Holy Spirit. We and our Father are one in Jesus. What kind of fellowship is this? It is union with love. ‘Love’ is what the trinity have because love is what the trinity are: A fellowship of joy and togetherness.
The Trinity “means that God is not some remote, unknowable Deity, a prisoner in his aloofness or shut up in his solitariness, but on the contrary, the God who will not be without us whom he has created for fellowship with himself, the God who is free to go outside of himself, to share in the life of his creatures and enable them to share in his own eternal Life and Love.”
Fragmentation of self and the church occurs when we live in old covenant separation. Togetherness in Christ is our new covenant reality. This reality is Christ our life – which bluntly means Jesus is us.
‘When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory’ Col 3.4 NIV. This glory is the I AM of you and the I AM of the Body of Christ.
We slipped out of our inheritance by believing a lie. We enter our inheritance by BELIEVING the truth.
By embracing the truth that we and Father are one we become that truth.
We experience the healing of our being and flourish in our uniqueness as a son/daughter. But living in the trinity we also bear community and the power of togetherness in our being.
As sons of God we shed community abroad because we have become community. The trinity has come to live in us, manifest through us and be expressed as us.
‘Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me’ John 6.57 NIV. By feeding on Jesus we will become His life and be drawn into what is His: Companionship with God.
