TO KNOW GOD AS GOD
God is a relational being. To say that God is love is to say that God is relationship. Not a relationship of distance and separation or the kind of relationship that a stoic might value but a relationship of oneness and joy.
God is not an abstraction and is so personal that He is trinity – a state of being one God with three persons who live in oneness with each other yet are distinctly themselves.
This oneness has nothing to do with the law and everything to do with RELATIONSHIP. You may think it scandalous if still enclosed in religious tights – but the union of a husband and wife in their everyday and most intimate sense is similar to the union that God has in the trinity and the union God has with you – not sexually of course, but metaphysically.
We are talking a state of being. In marriage God calls it ‘knowing’ your spouse. In the trinity it is described as a deep knowing and communing. Jesus says “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me’ John 17.20-23 NIV.
PERVERSE SCRIPTURAL RENDERINGS
We often interpret the above passage in a legalistic sense that means ‘Get yourself into gear and get on well together so that you can be a decent witness.’ If only. Unless Christ is in us and being us by incarnation we have as much chance of being nice community folks as a snow flake has of surviving hell.
In Jesus we and our Father are one. This means we are one with the trinity, one in a real fellowship and that his fellowship is alive and active in our empowering us to be like God. Baxter Kruger emphasises, “There was never a time when the Father was not Father, when the Son and the Spirit were not there and there was just God, so to speak, just some abstract divinity. God has always existed in relationship. Fellowship, camaraderie, togetherness, communion have always been at the center of the very being of God, and always will be.” (1)
ISSUE OF LIFE
This fellowship and communion is the issue of life. Not the law or a battle between good and evil. It’s true that good and evil vie for supremacy. But only because Believers and others ignore the incarnation and Christ as our life to live Christian Moralism or ignorance of God. Jesus did not leave us a religion. He left us Himself TO BE US.
GOD IS LIFE
God is not just love. God is life. Certainly God’s love of life is evident in people and the creation. But God is life itself. God is life and is infinite life. Which is why Jesus came among us to offer life without limit. But we must be joined to God to be alive. In oneness our being becomes spirit and life. We are alive in His fullness and not just undead as we are in religion.
In the law we may not know that we are undead, that we are wooden and spiritually blind. And if we persist in our legalisms we will lose the ability to perceive light and life because we have gone into a coma in our idolatry to our aberrations.
But there is a God who is seeking to awake us, to speak to us, to give us the joy that the trinity enjoys and to help us be the person you are - son/daughter of God with unlimited potential to express life.
This is the God who lives in you and the God in whom we live, move and have our being. We can believe in a separated, disconnected christ as did Arius of the Arian controversy and live in a legalistic separation from God as well. It’s part of the same deal. But you are not separated from God. The cross has undone separation. You are joined to God and in His fellowship in Jesus. You and the trinity are woven into each other’s being.
