‘Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent’. Eternal life is infinite, omnipresent and of the moment and the season. Quite simply life is in ‘knowing God’ as God is.
The kind of religion we have been taught conditions the kind of God in which we believe. Due to socialisation and conditioning we become the lens through which we see God and perceive salvation.
If we come from generations that have known God through Jesus Christ we are most fortunate. If we have belonged to communities whose doctrine has been influenced by a crooked lens, there is some un-binding to be done and the adventure of entering the doctrine of Jesus and the apostles is before us.
If you have a hunger for God – like David – and many do, you will have become subject to the presence and light of Jesus, which is to say you will have been bathed in revelation. You will have been positioned to live in the ‘undoing of lies’ that have issued from the father of lies. You will be well on the way to escaping the condition of ‘tares’ because, with Jesus you have allowed yourself like a grain of wheat to be cast into the ground to spring up anew as part of the new creation.
TRUTH AND LIFE
As a result you will increasingly have come to know God as God as and His Son whom He has sent. Father is not mean. He does not wear a perpetual frown, is not a control freak and is in favour of fun. Jesus’ Kingdom is not an austerity regime. It is meant to be the manifestation through us of the life, joy and togetherness that is the trinity.
The purpose of God is to multiply in sons the fullness of life enjoyed in the trinity and in heaven. God is not moody. Is not angry with everyone and did not kill Jesus so that He would not have to kill you.
Jeff Turner observes, “I began to come to the uncomfortable conclusion that I had gotten off track somewhere. The majority of passages relating to Christ’s death seemed to highlight the fact that He died at the hands of sinful men and not beneath the weight of God’s wrath, and that the role the Father played was in raising Him back to life, not in taking His life away.” (1)
God is always renewing and restoring life.
We humans killed the Christ. We did it because we had adopted a form of life so perverse that we crucified Real Life when He came among us.
There’s a reason why many Believers reject the real gospel in favour of a mean version of separation and works. They cannot believe His life as ours is real religion and must concoct additions of their own. They reject the radical truth for the same reason religious people put Jesus on the cross. As in Jesus day they do these things because, ‘They know not what they do.’
Some rejections of life occur because of misunderstanding. Others because of an obstinate spirit. Others because of an addiction they have to the community of belief in which they have been raised. One need not be an overtly evil person to take sides against Christ. Just a person who prefers darkness rather than light because it’s their darkness.
KNOWING WHAT WE DO
People can know what they do. Stagnation results from inertia and addiction to our own ideas. Ideas are not sacred or true because we got them from our parents. Or because they are believed by important people. Truth is truth because it is synonymous with God, His actions and His Gospel.
