‘When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory’ Col 3.4 NIV.
Any variety of Christianity based on moralism, ‘christian values’ or the law is not our inheritance in Jesus. Jesus did not leave us a religion. He left us Himself to live in us and express Himself as us by the Spirit. The effect of living Christianity as a religion is to insulate ourselves from His person and the agency of the trinity. Any entity or behavior that we regard as God dilutes God in our lives.
ONENESS WITH GOD
Just as Jesus is one substance with the trinity, so we are now one substance with Jesus and hence with God.* This is the gospel of the kingdom and the apostles teaching.
There’s nothing complex about living in the incarnation. It’s just a matter of living the Lord’s Table rather than celebrating it at church.
‘Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear?’ Acts 15.10 NIV.
‘Keeping close to Jesus’ is no more do-able that the keeping of the law that Peter exclaimed that none of us were able to do. It just shunts legalism down the line and hijacks the name of Jesus to do it. Jesus overcame that problem by incarnating Himself in you. Woven into your being He ‘becomes you.’
IT’S NOT A FEAT
You can relate to the incarnated Jesus just as easily as you can relate to your spouse. Jesus has already drawn you into His life by the atonement. He and the trinity live in you by the incarnation. When we live in this reality rather than in religious externalities and artifices we come alive with spirit and life. This is life in the Spirit. As a result, our activities and social lives become alive because we ourselves are life.
God’s glory is who God is. The glory of God is God’s kindness, love, life and grace. God’s glory is revealed as His Person is revealed. “This trinitarian revelation of God the Father through the Spirit in Christ is at once the glorifying of Christ and the glorifying of the Father with a glory within which we also are embraced. ‘God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts, to give the light of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.’” (1)
‘To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory’ Col 1.27 NIV.
We can live from the law/religion and rise to a caricature of ourselves. We can live Christ our life and become ourselves with increasing glory. Your glory is to live in the potential of the sonship in which you were made.
WE ARE NOT DEITY. BUT WE ARE SONS
The Spirit in you reveals Christ to your spirit. Christ reveals you to you. Christ in you is the hope and the present reality of glory for Christ and for you. Christ your life is the manifestation of the trinity as you. Christ is not somewhere else. He has come in your flesh as the witness to Himself as the witness to you as you real self as a son/daughter of God.
We can live in religion as a respectable egg but with Christ as our life we become eagles. * We are not of course deities. (1) Torrance, Thomas F.. The Christian Doctrine of God, One Being Three Persons (T&T Clark Cornerstones) (p. 65). Bloomsbury Publishing. Kindle Edition.
